Ladislav Skyva (†90) : Founder of the Department of Technical Cybernetics Passes Away

With deep sorrow we regret to inform the academic community and general public that on Sunday 29 December 2024 our colleague and friend - a prominent personality of international importance, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences for Transport, founder of the study field of Cybernetics in Transport and Communications, a long-time university teacher and scientist, Mr. Ladislav Skyva, died at the age of 90 years. In 1972 he contributed to the establishment of the Department of Technical Cybernetics, which became one of the founding components of the Faculty of Management Sciences, later the Faculty of Management Science and Informatics. Before his retirement in 2009, he was an important coordinator of projects financed by European framework programmes for research and technological development in the field of transport at the University of Žilina.
He was born on 23 June 1934 in the village of Čechyně, in the South Moravian Region. In 1960 he graduated with honours from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Railway College (VSZ) in Prague. In 1964 he obtained the degree of Candidate of Science (CSc.) at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of the University of Transport (VSD) in Žilina. He successfully habilitated at the same faculty in 1967 and was appointed professor in 1977. Meanwhile, in 1975 he was awarded the title of Doctor of Science (DrSc.) at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In his scientific activities, Mr. Skyva has devoted his lifetime mainly to the field of optimal control of systems and transport processes and the simulation of large railway junctions.

A burial ceremony took place on 7 January at 12.00 p. m. at the Old Cemetery in Žilina.
